Ranong is situated on the Thai-Burma border. It is in Thailand, directly south-east of the southern-most town of Burma, Kaw Thaung. Due to its position it attracts many people from Burma (Myanmar). They are drawn here to work, mostly in fishing-related industries. Often they find the conditions here difficult, though better than the conditions in their homeland.
Ranong is well-known for its fishing industry. Boats catch fish in both Thai and Burmese seas. Most of the workers in the industry are Burmese migrants.
